The Parallel to Descartes' Meditations
The paradox of the continuum has to do with the idea that there's an infinite number of points on a line. If any of them have any extension, then the line would have to be infinitely long. He's also thinking about the mind-body problem and physics. All these things motivate this sort of unified theory, which is the monad. And in fact, this reading is a direct parallel to Descartes' meditations.
