Hawaii is unusual and it should not go underappreciated. It was a place where evangelical Christians who had developed a fair bit of political power almost everywhere else in the United States throughout the 1980s had almost no footprint at all. So there was not a real sort of homegrown social conservative opposition. The gay rights community, you know, there was a general sense of acceptance that was ahead of most other states in the country.
