Episode # 208: Sudden Cardiac Death in Sport

Barbell Medicine Podcast

CHAPTER

Surviving a Sudden Cardiac Arrest

From a screening perspective, the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest related to sports and young people is relatively low. By definition, for extremely rare events, most positive or abnormal screening tests are going to be false positives rather than true positives. Less than 50% of patients who ultimately have sudden cardiac arrest are identified by screening. About 30 to 40% of all sudden cardiac deaths in sport involve no identifiable electrical or structural abnormalities.
