Most historical fiction is an animated by the passion to show a contrast between some characters who have modern values and other characters. The whole point of showing that contrast is to praise the former and criticize the latter. A lot of science fiction is written this way in showing that the moral trends and attitude trends over the last few centuries continue on into the future. But if you think of like the culture novels or Star Trek they are presenting more forager futures.
