The Impact of Euclid's Elements on the Greek and Roman World
Euclid's elements were seen as a live enough piece of mathematics, that people felt almost compelled to not just leave it alone. They have a very wide influence because the manuscripts are very numerous. My favorite piece of evidence about the transmission of the elements at the time is five pieces of a broken pot which have been found inside an Egypt. Someone around possibly the second or first century BCE found this broken pieces of pot and wrote parts of Euclid's book 13 on them.
