Miraculously, as infantry file onto the wooden plank deck, it sinks down onto its flooded piers. Both sides claim victory, though neither gains or loses any ground. With almost 6,000 dead wounded and missing, and a wounded general to boot, June 1st is a dark day for the Confederates.
