Union brigadier general Randolph Marcy orders hard in general Edwin Bolzumner to march his 20,000 men over a crappy, nearly washed out bridge and reinforce Erasmus's overwhelmed men. Miraculously, as infantry file onto the wooden plank deck, it sinks down onto its flooded piers. Both sides claim victory, though neither gains or loses any ground. With almost 6,000 dead wounded and missing, and a wounded general to boot, June 1st is a dark day for the Confederates. But this cloud's silver lining is the quiet bearded Virginian now at their helm.
