The Benefits of the Free Empire

In medieval Europe, the emperor was always lonely and fighting with the Pope. Over time, more powerful local dukes and grand dukes or monarchs wanted to have a say in who is becoming the emperor. The whole emperor thing is only, okay, we are more powerful and we can assemble a bigger army if we are sticking together under the leadership of the emperor. That was reality in medieval Europe.
