Pan Am's Story
Pan Am filed for bankruptcy on January 8, 1991. After a bidding war, Delta Airlines purchased the majority of Pan Am for $1.4 billion. The airline that inaugurated commercial jet travel slowly self-destructed over the 1980s when it sold off its prize-specific routes and later sold most of its remaining European routes. Today, Pan Am endures only as a symbol of the American century.
