The Importance of Tonality in Music
The principle theory that surrounded this music was that it wasn't modal anymore. And so there was this kind of no-wear land. I had to start with a very strong sense of how late 16th century modal music worked. If I could analyze that music in the same way that I was able to work with 18th and 19th century music, then I could begin to see what had to shift. But as long as we were just dealing with chords, we weren't going to get anywhere at all.
