Is There a Recurrence of Infection?
The patient was discharged on three weeks of vancomycin followed with labs and outpatient follow-up. He was actually transitioned to doxycycline after three weeks to complete his course. And initially, his symptoms had improved. But then at six-week follow-up appointment, he described new radiating, lightning-like pain down his left leg. A repeat MRI was obtained because of concern for an unresolved infection. The patient ended up being admitted to the hospital for a planned decompression surgery but that grew MRSA again. So now this patient has had an failed initial course of treatment and now has implanted hardware in his spine.
