What's So Unconventional About the Scherzo?
The scherzo was invented, essentially by beethoven as an evolution of the minuet. A scherzo is still meant to be a dance, but by his fifth symphony, beethoven was evolving even further. What i find amazing in this movement is many things just stop and start and stop and start again. Take just after the opening theme is played. It's kind of like watching an orchestra learn to walk.
