The Other Is Essential to the Self
I think we could alleviate assumptions about that by his repeated reference to age or joy about her otherness and being other. It reminds me of a philosopher who was contemporary with Lewis, Mikhail Bakhtin, who was in Russia. He said consummation is an establishment of our identity by the other. You never fully know yourself until you're in relationship with the other.
