Before the enlightenment, people had reasons for their beliefs. But now they need to have a whole series of arguments that back them up. The best way to explain these objective facts is jesus really was raised from the dead. That's what you mean by the enlightenet probject yesbea. I think in thomas guina's day it was really to support people and to provide them with ways of thinking about the divine more sophisticated than simply accepting it because your mamma dad told you so.

Michael Shermer speaks with renowned biblical scholar and historian, Bart Ehrman, about: how we know Jesus existed and was crucified; how these questions are different epistemologically from those about Jesus’ resurrection and the claim that he died for our sins; how Christians deal with the trinity problem: How can God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit be one and the same and yet separate and different?
