The Role of Peasants in the Feudal System
Prior to the Black Death, about 90% of the wealth of England lay in land. About 70% of that land was held by the nobility and the church. Most of the rest was held by a wealthy middle class known as the gentry. The peasants were mostly people from Anglo-Saxon stock. They represented the traditional English-speaking class.
