I think a lot of norms are made up. They're usually made up for either arbitrary or bad reasons, but then there's like the norm that in the United States, we drive on the right side of the road,. That's a very useful social coordination kind of norm. And I'm just mentioning that I can't see a very simple way to delineate the difference between the useful norms and the just restrictive norms. So that's ongoing work as well.

God is dead, as Nietzsche’s madman memorably reminded us. So what are we going to do about it? If there is no powerful force out there to guide us and give meaning to our lives, how are we supposed to live? Do we have to come up with meaning and purpose ourselves? Apparently so, and how to pull it off was a major question addressed by the existentialist movement.
