Shostakovich's symphonies tend to be longer than those of almost any other composer. The theme that begins just after that jagged introduction is in essence still continuing. This is a bleak landscape, and one seems to have no end. Shostakovich will use this descending figure, plus the three note rhythm as almost a motto of the movement. Everything begins and ends with this motto.
