Alexander and his soldiers were led along this mountain path by people who, until recently, were their prisoners. The persian defence depended on these guides living up to their word,. Snowdrifts did hinder their progress, as did marching at night through this unfamiliar landscape. But after covering some 11 miles, according to arion, alexander and his men reached the top of this path. And from there they could descend on the gates by a number of routes. Alexander divided his elete force into two parts: one for him with macedonian infantry battalion; another for amintas philotas, polyperchin and coenus. They would be the main attacking force
