The Capacity to Internalize the Criticisms of Itself
Western society, it seems to me, has had a unique capacity over the last century. It's really only in that period of time that we're talking about. I suspect the reason for that is a holdover from Christianity. In the past, this has had positive effects where you see reform movements and things like that embraced by society. But today, unmoored from a biblical perspective, it leaves us vulnerable to self-flagellation.
