The Anomaly of Polarization

The middle of the century saw a relative non-polarization in U.S. society, but it didn't all go in one direction. I'm wondering why though, why we were less polarized because what I learned that was interesting just by looking at some more history is that the actualNonPolarization of the middle of the Century was the anomaly. There's something about patriotism that existed that I think was helpful to have people work together cooperation and compromise. And I wonder if there's some way to kind of foster an American identity?
