Smith's Vision of God's Purpose
Smith claimed that when he was 14, he was praying in the woods to know which church was true. Suddenly a bright light descended upon him and in the midst of that light were god and jesus christ. They called his name and told him that all the churches had drifted away from the true gospel,. That they had chosen him to restore it. The story was amazing, but to smith's contemporaries not unbelievable. There are scores and scores hundreds of accounts of other visionaries having roughly similar kinds of experiences to the kinds that Smith was describing.
