The Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of High Courts
Nehru said that we need persons with the highest integrity who can stand up against the executive moment and whoever might come in their way. Ambedkar also said that appointment should not be left to the executive or the legislature. During the period from 1950 to 1971, the Chief Justice's practically had a final word in matters of appointment. All this was to change when Indira Gandhi came back to power with an absolute majority.
