The Rise and Fall of the Advertising Press

In 1833, Benjamin Day started selling newspapers for a penny apiece. He would put advertising all over the paper in order to get people interested in it and increase his numbers. Before that point, news before advertising was not what we think of as news. It was like political broadsheets. If you wanted to actually read the news, you would pay the equivalent of like 20, 25 bucks. There were no real journalistic safeguards. Liable laws were kind of notoriously loose.
