If you go solar on your house, you essentially have a solar powered car. The cool thing is, this car has nearly 250 mile range on a full charge. It's generated on the fly as you need it, from the power station and delivered by the high tension lines. If that wouldn't work in places like seattle, where the sun never comes out, or up state new york. But yes, it would be believable if it's in a place where the sun is is prevalent.
