The 1848 revolutions trigger in Australia but also in the Cape Colony a movement to prevent the trans shipment of convicts. The Chartist movement didn't collapse under the weight of its own pointlessness it was brought down by the strong arm of the state whenever the Chartist turned up. There were 80,000 special constables present at that meeting armed with bar iron bars and you know wooden clubs  and among the special constables he wasn't called into service on Kennington Common was the future Napoleon III. No other society succeeded in mobilizing such a force in support of its own institutions.
