Walt believes the thing attacked him and his regiment in retaliation. He says it emitted impulses in waves that you could visually see only when it was aiming directly at you. They felt burning tingling sensations as though they were being penetrated by energy emitted from this object. At which point these guys just decide that wisdom is the better part of valor, and they run away.
