So much of what's pleasurable and fun, we're just talking run don't a meaningwhen i'ma sheer pleasure. I'll never forget, from an early age, my dad always used to say, you know, you need the pain to be able to really appreciate the pleasure. Only something an adult, a grown adult, would know when youve been through enough. And for me, the best illustration of a sort of contour of pleasure comes from movies. The success is only sweet in lightef to prior suffering.

Paul Bloom is a professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto. He was also the Brooks and Suzanne Ragen Professor of Psychology and Cognitive Science at Yale University . Paul studies how children and adults make sense of the world, with a focus on pleasure, morality, religion, fiction, and art.

Paul's newest book is The Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning.
