i don't think he was just scheming to control people. He was a man captive to his impulses, no whirling mess of conflicting and competing fears and urges. In any given moment, this one might control him, and the next moment, that one might take over. As time went on, as his drug abuse became more extreme, he spent so much time around people who not only would never check those impulses but played an active role in amplifying them. You know, from neuroses on to pathology all the way down to derangement. If you don't get that part and try to frame every decision jim jones makes in terms of this grand plot to lead people
