The Depth Charge Against the Institution of Slavery
The new testament has to be judged in terms of what the possibilities were at the time. Paul doesn't just say you should all give up your slaves at once, he puts a kind of a depth charge against the whole institution. The gospel starts as a movement which says neither slave nor free and then has to live with how that works out in practice. We have to be aware of moralizing back from 19th century slavery but imagine that it was always like that.
