Beta Thalassemia and Iron Deficiency Anemia

Before 2021, there really wasn't any peer-reviewed data that we could point you to go look. Now a study in the British Journal of Hematology studied patients with beta thalassemia minor who also had iron deficiency anemia. They found that ferritin level actually increased to a greater degree than their serum hemoglobin. But because they still have that background of jacked up beta globin genes, there's only so much that they can do. So make sure to do a complete set of iron studies if you can't figure out if the anemia and pregnancy is due to the Beta Thalassemia or a superimposed iron deficiency anemic as well.
