For me the historical study of early christianity has been absolutely central to my work. The heart of it all is being so soaked in the scriptures and i don't know what your personal daily disciplines are but for me over many years i have found myself day by day spending longer and longer in scripture every morning. So much of the quintessence of the faith is in page after page of the gospels one says.
