As a young man, I was deeply disturbed by the hypocrisy of that and by what that all meant. The divine is this beautiful male to whom you relate, if you're a man or a woman, but for a man, it becomes this kind of sublimated homoerotic relationship. Hence, all of the crucifixes with the muscly and agonizing Jesus on them, there's something vaguely erotic about the iconography.
