Why Is Eschatology a Waste of Time?

The text is too broad in certain respects and too precise in other respects to allow us to claim certainty. So why bother? It doesn't matter if we get surprised by how it plays out, because we should be following jesus anyway. i don't see at all how current science, current military technology has anything to do with the mark. And what we see in revelation when we have other things like taking the name as demonstrably non literalist in biblical thought.
