Indian societies tended to have a gender split of responsibilities. Men would often leave the village for long periods hunting while women were based in one place. The peoples of the eastern woodlands like anywhere else managed their environments according to their needs. When colonists came including the English they judged these practices from their own outlook and idiom. They didn't recognize that the parkland type landscape was molded by human intervention. It's often the good intentions that you've got to watch hardest.
