Gaius Ma rius was a Roman consul who died aged 70. He fell ill just ten days into the new year of his prophesied seventh consular office. Some say he drank himself into numbness to cope, and so left his aged system vulnerable. Others say that he became delusional and hallucinatory as the fever progressed.
