The Mytho, Poetic Imagination

There is a very useful function to gods, which we, as a rationalist society have almost all but forgotten. Embodying abstract concepts like good and evil in the form gods gives us a much more direct relationship with these complex philosophical ideas. Whether you believe in their metaphysical existence or not, gods are effective vehicles for our ideals. For example, many ancient cultures have some form of deity for earth itself. One well known example being gaya as mother earth. A belief in gaya comes with a respect and reverence for our planet and nature. This is what the mytho, poetic imagination is all about.
