easy english expression: Selling some one out is not good. It means to betray the person. To sell someone we tell about that person some secret. So for example, if eric sells shane out, that means eric tells somebody my secret, shane's secret. And in exchange for that secret, eric gets some maybe some money, or maybe another secret, or maybe a promotion at the company. He gains something. That's why we say sell because if you sell something, you receive money.
