He enlists as a private soldier under an officer named henry h stanley and wound up fighting with a unit called the dixie grace at the battle of shiloh. Stanley later wrote of his feelings while standing in the carnage that he felt shocked to see quote "the human form we made so much of should now be mutilated hacked and outraged"
