The Alaskan Quake and the Localized Tsunamis
In some places, the ground moved so much that it liquified. Liquification occurs during strong earthquakes on soil that is very loose and has a lot of water. Much of what geologists know about soil liquification came from the Alaskan earthquake. The land moving into the water then caused a massive localized tsunami. One wave reached a height of 220 feet as it washed up on the surrounding mountains.
