American glider pilots did receive some basic combat training but you're right, that was not their mission. Their job was to deliver the cargo, the troops to the battlefield and basically get back to base or five hours away perhaps as quickly as possible. They were remarkably dedicated group of you guys gave them something about a mixed reputation but they met their mission well time after time.
