Is Data Good or Bad?
In the end, there's going to be lots of things that data is powerful at helping with speech recognition and medical advances. But when it's built into an infrastructure where say you're allowed to bulldoze entire communities as happened in many American cities in the second half of the 20th century, you've then created a system with incredibly negative externalities. This is the I keep thinking about the printing press, which is something I spent a lot of time working on and writing about. It was never a given that the printing press was going to become a commercial technology.
