The Intensity of Suffering
The rich young ruler's case the natural man won. And he was devastated by that defeat. Well Jesus isn't going to be defeated. But he's feeling that kind of intense sorrow. It's as if the father is saying to him, son, one thing thou lackest. You have to partake of the bitter cup and sell all that you have to give to the poor. And what do you have? You have your life. Your perfect life. Lay it on the altar. Give it up. And give it to all those who are poor in spirit, who come unto thee. For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
