There's a very long tradition of things coming from the Chinese mainland and in one way or another being incorporated, adapted, hybridized you might say in Japanese culture. The idea that this country which we thought of as very much a smaller, less central part of that world is something that was really deeply humiliating and embarrassing there's a word often used by the scholar Joshua Fogel based in Canada called Sino sphere together term has been used elsewhere but I think Fogel has really pushed interpretation of that forward.
