The Third Rome and the Russian Empire

The concept of the third Rome is at the heart of a Russian sense of mission. The idea that Russia was the this providential land chosen to save humanity is at the very heart of both the Russian Empire and indeed communism itself. It's deeply connected to the sacralization of power because it's the Tsar who has this mission not just to save humanity, but also to prepare his people for the final judgement.
