The statement that the total evolution of black holes should be information conserving is a subtle one. If you all you know or all you're told is the state after a measurement or branching, you can't reproduce what the state was before. That is an irreversible information-losing process. The point of the paper was we took seriously the idea of branching and decoherence, etc.
