In 1543, a Polish mathematician and astronomer named Nicholas Copernicus published on the revolutions of the celestial spheres. Compounding the sense of insignificance that came from our expanding universe was Darwin's theory of human origins. After such a reduction in cosmic status, it's no wonder many people felt an immense and overpowering despair.
