Regenerating an entire limb takes a huge amount of energy, protein and nutrients. Some species have come up with creative ways to get around these costs such as limary ranging. We humans similarly avoid these costs by forming scar tissue instead. For example, jellyfish can adjust the position of other arms to fill in the gap and learn to swim with this new setup.
