General Custer's Death in the Bighorn Mountains

George Armstrong Custer led a force into the Bighorn Mountains in what's now Montana. He and his cavalry detachment came upon an Indian village near the mountain called Little Bighorn, which he took to be an enemy base. And so they were then ambushed, surrounded and killed almost to the man by this force of 3000 Indian fighters. In news of this complete destruction of Custer's forces got back to the east, it created waves of enormous public shock and outrage.
