The image was taken by the aveng horizon telescope of sagetarys a star, which is the black hole at the centre of our galaxy. We are looking at an image that looks like a doughnut shaped ring with a nice black patch in the middle on a black background. So what we're actually seeing then, in the orange rings, the doughnut, the blobs and on, is not the black hole itself, but the the area around it.
