On October 11, 1991, just 12 days into the mission, 29-year-old Jane Pointer from Surrey, England put her hand in a thrashing machine while sifting rice. After intense discussions amongst the team, she was removed from the enclosure for surgery. In January 1992, it was revealed that when Jane Pointer re-entered the airlock after surgery, she brought a duffel bag of supplies with her. It really wasn't anything of substance, but the media had a field day with it and said it was further proof that the experiment was bogus.
