Is There a Dignity to Labor?
Zelizer: Even if we grant that great talents and minds could come from the lower classes, isn't that the very tragedy of being lower class? He says Nietzsche sees in the Greeks the idea that labor was not a source of dignity but of shame. Zelizer: If therefore we want to have a society that produces Mozart's and Isaac Newton's and Gantas, we have to create a situation where some people labor for the benefit of others. The beauty and knowledge and accomplishments of our culture are the fruits of slavery, he writes.
